New to Dervish
I'm fairly new to Guild Wars. My first campaign was Prophecies so my main character is one of the 6 core professions, a necromancer. Not so long ago I bought Nightfall aswell and I find Dervish a cool looking character. And I was wondering if they were just the cool looks or actually quite useful. I was wondering because if it goes about farming or team builds for not so easy pve situations it almost mainly the core professions that are being used. If any faction or nightfall profession is used it's mostly as secondary for a few usefull skills of that profession. So why is this? Just because the core professions are the oldest and people are most familiar with them or are they just "better" then the newer professions?
I'm not planning on changing my main character, wouldn't want to do it all over on a new char. But maybe a Dervish might be fun to play with now and then ...

the core professions are better for farming, but the rest are still just as good for normal playing. they just play differently and are better at different things........ie. dervs use enchantments instead of a warriors heavy armor, they have more energy, are better at aoe and can heal others
theyre not neccesarily worse, but theyre different to the core professions, and people like the traditional roles of the core professions

Only the core professions are used (well - war/ele/monk) because people are too ignorant and scared to try out something new. They also refuse to believe how good the newer professions are (such as paragons..).

Ok, and could a Dervish hero be useful in certain situations?

Dervs
Personally, i have a dervish and have had it for sometime and i've noticed that in nightfall I beat it the easiest with my derv. I beat it with an ele, a rit, and a warrior and my derv was just so easy to use compared to them. If you get a good build together you'll have amazing regen, very strong attacks and aoe amongst other things. I think in terms of survivability dervs do an amazing job. I also agree that derv heroes do not make very good heroes simply because there's too many dervish skills that heroes will not use properly. I hope this helps out a bit.

Yeah, I can relate to that - the Dervish was the first class I noticed (once I stopped buying into the rending build idea the starting setup was forcing on me) I was actually not having too hard a time with. A fair deal of that probably came down to the heroes and the fact that a monk or a rit aren't too great for H/H play, though.
It took me a fair bit longer to work out that Dervishes work best in PvE going for DPS and not defence though. A properly-specced Lyssa Dervish can give Ursan Blessing a run for its money in terms of DPS.
